Last night marked the opening of Eric Fischl’s Portraits exhibition at Mary Boone’s Gallery. It is the first time Boone has dedicated both her Midtown and Chelsea Gallery spaces to one artist. The opening party was at the 24th street location with a reception following at the Boom Boom room. Eric’s portraits are truly breathtaking. He does it for me with art what Nicolas Ghesquière does season after season with fashion. Both are so innovative with color and technique to the point where it is hard to understand why others even bother. In my ultimate fantasy world I would be in the background of Eric’s painting entitled The Gang (pictured below) wearing a SS12 Balenciaga mega-brim hat. One can only dream…
I am a bit of a loser in the presence of artists and turn into the paparazzi type. It is hard to help myself from clicking away if I see Andres Serrano and Chuck Close talking or when I catch Cindy Sherman prepping for a bike ride.
Eric’s work will be on display at both Mary Boone Gallery spaces until March 17th.
Chelsea: 541 West 24th Street
